Significant Figures Calculator
Calculate the number of significant figures in a number or round numbers to a specific number of significant figures. Perfect for chemistry, physics, and other scientific calculations.
How to Use This Calculator
This calculator has two modes:
- Count Significant Figures: Enter any number to find out how many significant figures it contains.
- Round to Significant Figures: Enter a number and specify how many significant figures you want to round it to.
Remember these rules for significant figures:
- All non-zero digits are significant
- Zeros between non-zero digits are significant
- Leading zeros are not significant
- Trailing zeros after a decimal point are significant
- Trailing zeros in a whole number are not significant unless explicitly shown with a decimal point
Understanding Significant Figures
Significant figures (also known as significant digits) are the digits in a number that carry meaningful value. They are crucial in scientific measurements and calculations as they indicate the precision of a measured or calculated value.
The concept of significant figures is important in:
- Laboratory measurements and experiments
- Scientific calculations and data analysis
- Engineering precision requirements
- Chemistry and physics calculations
- Quality control and measurement standards
